22nd July 2008 at 11am. The Inveraray Highland Games were said to have started in 1563, when Mary Queen of Scots visited her half-sister the Countess of Argyll. The Games consist of traditional piping, dancing and athletics, demonstrated by the finest in their fields from all over World. One of the highlights of the Inveraray Games is the Challenge Caber, one of the longest cabers in the Games circuit measuring 21 feet and 6 inches. The caber is thrown and judged on the style of the throw, rather than the distance. As well as the Games, there are a variety of stalls selling clothes, food and gifts, demonstrations from the armed forces and amusement rides. |

Thursday 28th August 2008. Oban is the place to be to enjoy a highland games that is unsurpassed by any other. In the Track and Field events and in the Dancing many of the competitions are for Scottish championship titles and in the solo Piping, the competitions are for World championship titles. These are the pre-eminent piping competitions in the world and the only ones of this standard still to be held in the great outdoors. |

Saturday 6th September 2008. Dalmally Agricultural Society hold their annual show at the Mart Park, Dalmally, on the banks of the River Orchy. The stock area has the largest entry of Highland Cattle in the UK. Traditionally known as the ladies’ section, the Industrial Section is now entered by men and women wishing to show their talents in baking. There are also competition classes for Home Industries, photography and dogs. |

Saturday 9th August 2008. A major event held annually with hundreds of exhibitors entering competitions in Baking, Produce, Crafts, Flowers and Vegetables as well as the Dog and Livestock classes. The spectators enjoy watching the judging of Cattle, Sheep, Dogs Horses and Ponies. They are entertained by music from the Pipe Band and displays of Sheep Shearing and Wood Carving. A six a side Shinty Tournament is also an attraction for the crowd, as is the team events of plank racing and children's Quad Bike Pulling . The many trade Stands provide an opportunity to browse and buy everything from crafts, clothing, toys and produce to agricultural machinery and equipment. |
